Biology is the Science of Life and is a useful subject for many career pathways such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, health and physical education, horticulture, agriculture, farming, teaching and in the food industry. It is also a subject of general interest for many people, in areas such as conservation, wildlife, stem cell research, genetic engineering and general health & well-being.
The 13 Biology course consists of the study of evolution and speciation, human evolution, a biological investigation based around animal behaviour, research resulting in forming an opinion on a socio-scientific issue and how homeostasis is maintained in animals.
Term 1
Term 1 starts with an internal assessment where students research a biological issue that has a social impact. They research the science of the issue as well as different opinions on the issue and form their own opinion.
Following this the learning is focussed on Speciation. This standard is an external one and will be assessed during an exam at the end of the year.
Term 2
Speciation continues at the beginning of term 2.
Animal behaviour and testing environment stressors on this is the focus for the first internal assessment of term 2. Students will be designing and carrying out their own Biological investigation which they will write up as a formal internal assessment report.
Term 3
The second external standard is on Human Evolution. Students learn the origins of humans, evidence for the anatomical differences in modern humans and ancient relatives, distribution of humans across the world and cultural evolution that has lead to us being the most successful species on Earth.
Finally the last internal assessment is based are thermoregulation homeostasis.
Term 4
Term 4 focuses on revision and preparation for External Exams in November.
